WebActivity monitor showed a "Safari Web Content" process using one full CPU core at 100%. Getting a trace from that process, showed some references to Dev Tools. Switching off "Show develop menu" from settings > advanced, and then restarting the application solved for me. I was able to switch dev tools back on, and so far the issue has not returned.
